WASHINGTON, July 5 (UPI) -- Eddie Gaven scored with a minute remaining Saturday to give the undermanned MetroStars a wild 3-2 MLS victory over D.C. United.

After regulation, Metros Coach Bob Bradley moved scoreeeper Tim Howard into the field and replaced him with Mark Lisi, who gave way to Gaven. The strategy paid off as Gaven ran onto a ball from Amado Guevara on the left side, held off defender Ryan Nelsen and hooked a shot past goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

United came close near the end of regulation. In the 88th minute, Marco Etcheverry played a high ball to Santino Quaranta, who looped a volley that Howard managed to tip over the crossbar.

Etcheverry converted a penalty kick just eight minutes into the game, but Jaime Moreno and Ricardo Clark answered for the MetroStars.

Dema Kovalenko lifted D.C. into a 2-2 tie.
