LOS ANGELES, July 3 (UPI) -- If it happens, it could be one of the biggest matches of the offseason.

The Los Angeles Daily News reported Thursday that veteran power forward Karl Malone, who is looking for a new team after years with Utah, has had a face-to-face meeting with officials of the Los Angeles Lakers, who need a power forward.

The Lakers released Robert Horry on Monday and the three players left on their roster at the position all are average players and are free agents.

The paper said no one involved in the Wednesday meeting had any comment.

Malone, who turns 40 this month, earned $19 million last season, his 18th with the Jazz, and has said money is not the issue.

"The priority is the winning ability, the championship caliber of the team," Malone's agent, Dwight Manley, told the paper.

The 6-9, 256-pounder has career averages of 25.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game and is second for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on the NBA's all-time points list.
