Tampa Bay 4, Boston 3 (1 innings)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., July 1 (UPI) -- Rocco Baldelli was in the middle of a strange 11th inning Tuesday as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays posted a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

With one out in the 11th and Carl Crawford at first base, Baldelli popped up to center field, but the Red Sox lost the ball in the lights. Running on the pitch, Crawford slid into second base, got up, ran past the bag, then retreated toward first before right fielder Trot Nixon finally threw to second for a forceout.

Baldelli stole second and appeared headed for third on another pitch from Brandon Lyon (3-5). Lyon wheeled and tried a pickoff that bounced off the glove of shortstop Nomar Garciaparra into center field, allowing Baldelli to race home with the winning run.

The Red Sox roughed up closer Lance Carter (5-3), tying it in the ninth on Todd Walker's two-run single.
