Maple Leafs shake up front office

TORONTO, June 27 (UPI) -- Pat Quinn stepped down Friday as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs and team president Ken Dryden received a promotion.

Quinn, who has two years left on his contract, will remain as coach. He took over the coaching duties on June 26, 1998 and added the general manager responsibilities a little more than a year later.

"We anticipated splitting Pat's dual role at a time that was best for the organization," said Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment Ltd. CEO Richard Peddie. "The process of hiring a new general manager will be carried out in a thorough and timely fashion, involving Pat, Ken and myself."

Dryden was named Vice Chairman of MLSEL. He also will be a member of the board of directors of the company and continue to serve as alternate governor of the Leafs.

His prior position of team president was eliminated.

The MLSEL shares of outgoing chairman Steve Stavro were sold to Bell Globemedia earlier this month.
