ST. LOUIS, June 26 (UPI) -- The St. Louis Rams Thursday signed backup quarterback Marc Bulger.

He signed a one-year deal and will be a restricted free agent in 2004. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Thursday that he signed for the league minimum for a third-year player.

If Bulger goes to another team, the Rams would receive draft-pick compensation in return.

Last season, playing in place of the injured Kurt Warner, he set an NFL record with 1,496 passing yards in his first five starts, finishing the campaign 138-of-214 for 1,826 yards and 14 touchdowns in six-plus games.

He began the 2002 campaign as a third-stringer, and was voted team MVP.

Bulger suffered a right hand injury against Philadelphia on Dec. 1.
