Steelers re-sign Marvel Smith

PITTSBURGH, June 25 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have re-signed offensive lineman Marvel Smith, who has started 40 games at right tackle over his first three NFL seasons.

The Steelers did not announce terms of the deal. ESPN.com reported it to be a six-year contract worth $26 million with a $6 million signing bonus.

The Steelers plan to move Smith to left tackle, even though he has no professional experience at that position. He will replace Wayne Gandy, the Steelers' starter at left tackle for the past four years, who has signed with the New England Patriots.

Smith will not turn 25 until August. Taken by the Steelers in the second round of the 2000 draft, he played left tackle for nearly three seasons at Arizona State.
