Lewis beats Klitschko, retains WBC title

LOS ANGELES, June 22 (UPI) -- A sluggish Lennox Lewis pounded his way to a sixth-round TKO of Vitali Klitschko Saturday night to retain his WBC heavyweight title.

Klitschko, who took the fight on two weeks notice when Kirk Johnson pulled out with an injury, spent the first two rounds having his way with an overweight, overconfident Lewis, who may have taken the Ukrainian challenger a bit too lightly.

But the idea of a huge upset was dashed in the third round, when the Brit scored with a pair of long right hands, one of which opened a nasty cut across Klitschko's left eyelid.

The challenger pressed on, but the cut became worse. Despite fervent corner work, the entire left side of Klitschko's head was caked with blood when the sixth round came to an end.

Dr. Paul Wallace looked at the inch-long gash and recommended that referee Lou Moret stop the fight.

Mike Tyson arrested in NYC brawl

NEW YORK, June 22 (UPI) -- Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson was arrested Saturday following a brawl outside a Brooklyn hotel.

Tyson was charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct after tangling with two men and a woman outside the Marriott Hotel around 5:30 a.m., NY 1 television reported.

Tyson was treated for minor hand wounds at the scene while the woman and one of the men were hospitalized in stable condition, NY 1 said.

Police did not say who started the fight or give any details.

It is another chapter in Tyson's long history of trouble with the law. He served three years in prison in Indiana for a 1991 rape conviction and in 1997 his boxing license was revoked and he was fined $3 million for biting off part of Evander Holyfield's ear during a match.

Only 11 players shot under par, with Norway's Suzann Pettersen carding the low round of the day, a 3-under 69 that moved her from a tie for 42nd into a tie for 10th.

Tina Barrett, the first-round leader, has a 3-over 75 and dropped into an 11-way tie for 10th.

Defending champion Karrie Webb of Australia posted a 1-over 73.

Rice has 1-0 lead in best-of-3 college series

OMAHA, June 22 (UPI) -- Kodiak Quick committed a throwing error with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday night.

That error allowed Chris Kolkhorst to score the winning run as Rice moved within a win of its first national championship in any sport with a 4-3 victory over Stanford at the College World Series.

Stanford (50-17) jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Rice ace Jeff Niemann, who entered the contest with a 17-0 record and a 1.67 ERA.

But Niemann settled down and the Owls (57-11) were able to rally, scoring once in the second and twice in the sixth to tie it.

Cardinal starter Ryan McCally (7-3) matched Niemann and actually started the 10th. But the senior walked Kolkhorst on five pitches before Dane Bubela sacrificed.

Hall of Fame coach Neilson dead at 69

NASHVILLE, June 22 (UPI) -- Hall of Famer Roger Neilson, who coached the most teams in NHL history, died Saturday after a long battle with cancer at age 69.

According to the Ottawa Senators, for whom he worked as an assistant coach the last three years, Neilson died peacefully at 1:15 p.m. EDT at his home in Peterborough, Ontario.

Nicknamed "Captain Video" for his trail-blazing use of videotape as a teaching tool, Neilson coached eight NHL teams -- Toronto, Buffalo, Vancouver, Los Angeles, the New York Rangers, Florida, Philadelphia and Ottawa -- during a 26-year span.

Late in the 2001-02 campaign, Ottawa's Jacques Martin stepped aside to allow his mentor to coach his 999th and 1,000th NHL games, becoming just the ninth man to reach the milestone.

Neilson lost his coaching job with Philadelphia in 2000 while battling multiple myeloma. He underwent chemotherapy and a stem-cell transplant, but the cancer recurred.
