EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., June 21 (UPI) -- Rookie Mike Magee netted his fourth goal of the season as the MetroStars snapped their two-game skid with a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Despite the rainy conditions at Giants Stadium, the 18-year-old Magee managed to work a give-and-go with midfielder Mark Lisi in the 65th minute and slotted an uncontested shot past goalkeeper Kevin Hartman and inside the left post.
Filling in for United States international goalkeeper Tim Howard, MetroStars backup Paul Grafer made five saves to record the second shutout of his MLS career and first since 1997.
Playing without suspended striker Carlos Ruiz, the Galaxy were unable to pressure the MetroStars defense consistently. Los Angeles' leading scorer, Ruiz was suspended two games and fined $1,000 by Major League Soccer on Thursday for elbowing Kansas City defender Carey Talley, causing an orbital fracture.
