KNOXVILLE, Tenn., June 20 (UPI) -- New Tennessee Athletic Director Mike Hamilton agreed to a four-year contract Friday that ties his pay to performance in the classroom and on the field.

University president John W. Shumaker said Hamilton will have a base salary of $230,000. In addition to an annual expense allowance of $15,000, he can earn up to $125,000 in bonuses based on team and academic accomplishments.

"Mike Hamilton is one of the young, shining stars in intercollegiate athletics," Schumaker said. "His commitment to the highest performance standards in the classroom and in the competitive arenas will serve our student athletes well."

Hamilton succeeds Doug Dickey, who is retiring on July 1 after serving as Tennessee's athletic director since 1985.
