CINCINNATI, June 19 (UPI) -- Veteran slugger Sammy Sosa hit a monstrous home run Wednesday night to help the Chicago Cubs top Cincinnati, 4-1.
The ball sailed above the television cameras in center field and left a visible dent on the wall. It was his first homer since May 1, a span of 69 at-bats, and seventh of the season.
"It was a good swing," Sosa said of the 464-foot blast. "I don't want to make a big deal of it."
Five of his seven home runs this season have come against Cincinnati, including his 500th on April 4.
Ironically, he also hit a broken bat single. Sosa had been serving a seven-game suspension, reduced by one game, after he hit a broken bat RBI grounder against Tampa Bay on June 3. The bat was found to be corked.
"My season started today because I can put everything in the past," Sosa said.
Cubs starter Kerry Wood retired the first 17 batters and finished with a three-hitter.
