Bartow, the former basketball coach at Memphis State, UCLA and Alabama-Birmingham, will start his three-month stint on July 1. After that, he will return to his job as special adviser for the Memphis Grizzlies.

He will replace Rick Bay, who resigned on May 22 two weeks after the school's auditor released a report that found state property was misused, programs and funds were mismanaged, and other improper activities had taken place in the department.

Bartow has coaching experience at six schools, and has guided his teams to a pair of NCAA Final Four appearances, three regional finals, 11 appearances in the NCAA tournament, and nine trips to the NIT.

After retiring from coaching, he served as athletic director at UAB from 1977-2000.
