Carpentier wire-to-wire Champ Car winner

MONTEREY, Calif., June 15 (UPI) -- Pole-sitter Patrick Carpentier of Canada led from start to finish Sunday and won the Champ Car World Series Grand Prix of Monterey.

Carpentier, who started from the pole after Michel Jourdain Jr. of Mexico failed a post-qualifying technical inspection, withstood pressure from teammate Paul Tracy and Bruno Junqueira during the 87-lap race.

But he kept his cool and went on to record his fourth career Champ Car win in a race that started under a yellow flag.

Carpentier averaged 107.986 miles per hour and was 0.844 seconds ahead of Tracy when he hit the checkered flag.
