Carpentier on pole

MONTEREY, Calif., June 14 (UPI) -- Mexico's Michel Jourdain Jr. failed a technical inspection Saturday, giving the pole at the Grand Prix of Monterey to Canada's Patrick Carpentier.

Jourdain's top speed of 115.875 miles per hour was dissalowed after his Team Rahal car was found to be underweight. He will start 13th, based on Friday's qualifying time, and will forfeit the point he earned for the pole.

Carpentier's speed of 115.800 mph put him on the pole for the fourth time in his career.

Brazilian Bruno Junqueira, Friday's provisional pole-sitter, is locked in the front row.

Junqueira's teammate, French rookie Sebastien Bourdais, was fastest in the morning practice sessions, but an engine problem held him back in qualifying and he will start fourth.

Paul Tracy, teammate of Carpentier at Player's Forsythe Racing, will start third.
