SEATTLE, June 12 (UPI) -- Seattle relief pitcher Kazuhiro Sasaki has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 6, with bruised ribs on his right side.
He suffered the injury while carrying his suitcase up a flight of stairs. The Japanese righthander sustained the injury on Sunday after the Mariners concluded an 11-1 road trip.
He also had spent time on the 15-day DL from April 23-May 7 with a strained muscle in his lower back.
In 22 appearances overall this season, Sasaki, 35, is 1-1 with a 4.12 ERA and 10 saves in 14 chances. The closer had been stellar since returning from the DL on May, allowing no runs and five hits in 11 appearances spanning 9 2/3 innings.
To take his roster spot, the Mariners have recalled righthander Julio Mateo from Triple-A Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League. Mateo is 1-0 with a 4.18 ERA in 16 appearances for Seattle this year.
