PITTSBURGH, June 11 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday named Ed Olczyk their new coach.

He has spent the last three seasons as the color analyst on the team's television broadcasts on Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh.

Olczyk played parts of two seasons with the Penguins in 1997 and '98.

"I think Eddie is a terrific choice," said Penguins owner Mario Lemieux. "I've had a chance to spend a lot of time with him over the past few years and I've always been impressed by his knowledge of the game. I've been his teammate, I've been his linemate, and can tell you that he knows this game inside and out."

Olczyk has no coaching experience in the NHL or the American Hockey League.

He retired in 2000, and becomes the NHL's second-youngest coach at 36 years of age. He is 5 1/2 months older than Paul Maurice of the Carolina Hurricanes.

He inherits a team that likely will not have Lemieux, who is expected to retire.
