This event was one of four tournament victories for Pistolesi last year, but the 26-year-old's best effort this season came in the first week of the season at the ASB Classic, where she reached the semifinals.

Fourth seed Silvia Farina Elia of Italy defeated Spanish qualifier Gala Leon Garcia, 6-4, 7-5. Farina Elia won the Strasbourg International the week before the French Open last month, but fell in the third round at Roland Garros.

Three qualifiers moved into the next round, including Croatia's

Karolina Sprem, a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 winner over Conchita Martinez Granados of Spain.
