HALLE, Germany, June 9 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Rainer Schuettler" class="tpstyle">German Rainer Schuettler and third-seeded Czech Jiri Novak posted wins Monday at the Gerry Weber Open.

Schuettler made good use of strong baseline play to put aside Denmark's Kenneth Carlsen, 6-3, 6-4, while Novak eased his way into the second round with a 6-2, 6-4 rout of German Hendrik Dreekmann.

Tournament officials hope Schuettler gets far in the draw, especially after local product Tommy Haas and world No. 4 Carlos Moya pulled out due to injuries. French Open winner Juan Carlos Ferrero had announced he would not play in Halle.

Fifth seed Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco stormed past 18-year-old German wild card Christopher Koderisch, 6-1, 6-2.

In other action, Feliciano Lopez of Spain upset seventh seed Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 and Fernando Vicente of Spain beat Hyung-Taik Lee of Korea, 6-4, 6-0.
