Sorenstam defeats Park in playoff

WILMINGTON, Del., June 8 (UPI) -- Annika Sorenstam defeated Grace Park on the first playoff hole of the LPGA Championship Sunday to win her fifth career major title.

A whirlwind three-week period came down to 12 feet, the distance of Park's par putt at the 18th hole. She left it above the cup, helping Sorenstam to her 45th career LPGA Tour victory.

Sorenstam sealed the win through the mist and gray skies at DuPont Country Club with a two-foot par putt.

It was the second win in eight days for Sorenstam, who claimed last week's Kellogg-Keebler Classic after becoming the first woman in 58 years to compete in a PGA Tour event.

Three weeks ago, Sorenstam missed the cut at the Colonial.

Sorenstam played 34 holes in 1-over par Sunday. She built a three-stroke lead with a 1-over 72 in the third round and struggled through a final-round 72.
