Kansas City 13, Colorado 11 (1st game)

DENVER, June 7 (UPI) -- Shawn Chacon surrendered a franchise-record 12 earned runs, Saturday as Kansas City beat Colorado, 13-1, in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Included in the outburst was a grand slam by Mike Sweeney.

Despite having to ply his trade in one of baseball's best hitters' parks, Chacon had been 6-0 with a 2.61 ERA at Coors Field this season. But he turned in the worst performance of his brief career and the worst ever for the Rockies, who have a long history of suspect pitching.

Chacon (8-3) surrendered nine hits and six walks in 3 2/3 innings. He left the game trailing 10-1.

The Royals scored five runs in the second inning on a solo homer by Angel Berroa and Sweeney's second career grand slam. They added seven runs in the fourth and built a 12-1 cushion.
