CHICAGO, June 6 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees, looking for a lefthanded bat, Friday brought back veteran outfielder Ruben Sierra.

He was obtained in a trade with Texas for minor league outfielder Marcus Thames.

Sierra, a former Yankee, was batting .263 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 43 games this season in his third career stint with the Rangers.

New York was in need for some depth on its bench since first baseman Nick Johnson and centerfielder Bernie Williams are on the disabled list.

Johnson sustained a fractured bone in his right hand in mid-May, and is expected to return later this month. Williams has undergone knee surgery and should be out until July.

Sierra is a lifetime .270 hitter with 279 homers and 1,193 RBI.

Thames, 26, was at Triple-A Columbus of the International League. He batted .278 with two home runs, 15 doubles, and 28 RBI for the Clippers.
