NEW YORK, June 5 (UPI) -- The New York Mets were swept in a doubleheader for the second time this season Thursday night as Tom Glavine was forced to leave in the top of the second inning of a 5-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.
After watching righthander Steve Trachsel serve up four homers in an 8-7 loss in the first game, New York Manager Art Howe was forced to remove Glavine (5-5) after a disastrous 54-pitch outing in which he gave up five runs, four hits and four walks.
The veteran lefthander started the second inning by allowing a double to Scott Podsednik and was taken out with inflammation in his pitching elbow. Glavine lost his third straight start and could become the latest Met to join a crowded disabled list that has eight players, including Mike Piazza, Mo Vaughn and Pedro Astacio.
The doubleheader sweep was the second of the season for New York, which struck out a record 27 times to the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 27.
The Brewers had 13 hits in the opener off Trachsel and three relievers and picked up where they left off with two outs in the first against Glavine.
Brady Clark had an RBI single, Keith Osik followed with a two-run double and Milwaukee starter Ben Sheets drew a bases-loaded walk after Glavine intentionally walked Royce Clayton.
Sheets (6-4) allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings.
Ty Wigginton was the lone the Met to solve him, connecting for a two-run homer in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth.
