NEW YORK, June 3 (UPI) -- Mike Deane, one of just 26 coaches to lead three different teams to the NCAA Tournament, was named Dereck Whittenberg's replacement at Wagner on Tuesday.

Deane has posted a 343-220 record in a 19-year career, leading Siena, Marquette and Lamar to the NCAA Tournament. He twice guided his program to its first NCAA Tournament berth, doing it with Siena in 1989 and Lamar in 2000.

Deane spent the past four seasons at Lamar but was let go when the school opted to bring back Billy Tubbs.

Deane has posted nine 20-win seasons and made four appearances

in the NCAA Tournament. He was named New York State Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1992 while at Siena. In 1989, the Saints upset Stanford in the first round of the East Region as a 14th seed.

Whittenberg replaced Bob Hill at Fordham after leading the Seahawks to a 21-11 record, the Northeast Conference championship and their first NCAA Tournament appearance last season.

"There is a great deal of momentum surrounding the men's basketball program built by the accomplishments of Coach Whittenberg and his staff and I hope to be a part of that continued success," Deane said.
