Perry stays hot at Memorial

DUBLIN, Ohio, May 30 (UPI) -- Five days after winning the Colonial, Kenny Perry shot a 4-under-par 68 Friday to take the lead after the second round of the Memorial.

"Everything that can go my way is going my way," he said after posting an 11-under 133 halfway total at Muirfield Village. "Every button I push is the right one."

Perry had a one-stroke lead over Lee Janzen (67) and South African Retief Goosen (67) while Fiji's Vijay Singh (69) and Spike McRoy (68) were three shots back.

Three-time champion Tiger Woods trailed by five after bogeying the last hole for a 71.

Perry's first tour victory came here in 1991. He also won on tour in 1994, 1995 and 2001 before last week's triumph.

He made an effort to slow down his swing last Friday and he has hardly hit a bad shot since.

"There are a few swing techniques I use when I am struggling and one has always been tempo," he said. "I slowed it down, and the next thing you know, I started hitting the ball higher and softer.

"I was happy with the way I played today. I hit a lot of fairways, a lot of greens. I actually left a few (strokes) out there. I really wanted to shoot something in the 60s today to get in position for the weekend and I was able to do that."

Woods, meanwhile, hit poor putts on the eighth and ninth holes before making an adjustment, which seemed to work on the inward nine.

"The blade was releasing early. I lowered my left shoulder on No. 10 and got back (to releasing the blade properly)," Woods said.

Woods double-bogeyed the eighth and bogeyed the ninth, but once he got his putting back on track, he picked up two birdies and an eagle in the next six holes.

Singh, meanwhile, refused to talk to the media, apparently avoiding reaction to Sorenstam's performance at last week's Colonial. Singh slammed the Swede's participation, then won the Byron Nelson Championship before pulling out of the Colonial.

However, Singh did talk to a PGA Tour media official, safe in knowing that he wouldn't receive any difficult questions.

"I don't think I hit the ball as well as I can. I managed to score well," he said.
