Richard Hidalgo goes on DL

HOUSTON, May 29 (UPI) -- The Houston Astros placed outfielder Richard Hidalgo on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, retroactive to May 23, with a mononucleosis-like virus.

Hidaglo was admitted to The Methodist Hospital with tonsillitis and a high fever last Friday. He spent three nights in the hospital before he was discharged.

Tests for mononucleosis were negative but Hidalgo has been diagnosed with a "mono-like virus." He will be elgible to return on June 7.

The Astros' starting right fielder, Hidalgo is batting .299 with seven homers and 25 RBI in 46 games.

In November, Hidalgo suffered nerve damage in his left forearm after being shot during a carjacking in his native Venezuela.

To replace Hidalgo on the roster, the Astros will purchase the contract of outfielder Colin Porter from Class AAA New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League on Friday.

Porter, who will join the Astros in time for their weekend series against the Chicago Cubs, batting .318 with three homers and 21 RBI at New Orleans.
