SAN FRANCISCO, May 28 (UPI) -- Marquis Grissom hit a two-run triple off Matt Mantei with two outs in the 13th inning Tuesday night to lift San Francisco a 4-3 win over Arizona.

Grissom hit a fly ball with one out in the ninth that led to a bizarre play on the basepaths, and San Francisco was forced to go extra innings. The missed opportunity worked in favor of the Diamondbacks, who took a 3-2 lead in their half of the 13th on a RBI double by Matt Williams.

Mantei (4-3), who took over in the bottom half of the inning, struck out J.T. Snow before walking pinch-hitter Rich Aurilia. Jose Cruz Jr. struck out, but Mantei walked Pedro Feliz to set the stage for Grissom, who drove a 2-1 pitch off the wall in right field to score both runners.

Felix Rodriguez (2-0) tossed two innings and recorded the victory despite allowing Williams' go-ahead double.

The game was tied 2-2 in the ninth, when pinch-hitter Andres Galarraga reached on an error with one out. Ruben Rivera came on to run and subsequently was involved in a bizarre play.

Arizona rightfielder David Dellucci mishandled Grissom's fly ball, but Rivera ran past second base. He went back to touch the bag, but had to vacate the base as Grissom was on his way to second.

Rivera headed to third and was going to be thrown out, but second baseman Junior Spivey made a wild throw that got away from Alex Cintron. As the ball bounced away, Rivera tried to score, but Cintron recovered and threw Rivera out at the plate.

"I don't know what happened," Rivera said. "I tried to come back to second base and then go to third base. I don't know if I can sleep tonight. It can happen to anybody. That's baseball."

"It was a difficult play," Grissom said. "I thought the ball was caught too. He made a baserunning error. You have to be halfway on those."
