DETROIT, May 26 (UPI) -- Dmitri Young homered early and Brandon Inge homered late Monday to help the Detroit Tigers to a rare home victory, 6-5 over the Cleveland Indians.
Young hit a three-run home in the second inning and Inge broke a tie with a solo shot in the seventh as the Tigers edged the Indians for just their fourth home win in 21 games this season.
Steve Avery (2-0) earned the win despite allowing a three-run homer to Brandon Phillips in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5.
But that set the stage for the light-hitting Inge, who had just seven hits in 59 at-bats this month before belting a 2-1 pitch from Jason Boyd (0-1) over the left field fence.
Detroit starter Jeremy Bonderman pitched six effective innings, allowing two runs and three hits in six innings. Franklyn German retired the side in order in the ninth for his second save.
Young continued to wield a hot bat, delivering an RBI single in the first and homering in the second off Jake Westbrook, giving him 22 RBI in May.
Westbrook lasted just three innings, allowing five runs and seven hits.
The Tigers won for the fourth time in five games after a seven-game losing streak.
