ANAHEIM, Calif., May 21 (UPI) -- Second baseman Jerry Hairston of the Baltimore Orioles was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a broken bone in his right foot.

A team spokesman said he is expected to be sidelined from six to eight weeks.

Hairston suffered a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone Tuesday night when he fouled off a pitch in the second inning of a 7-6 loss to the Anaheim Angels.

He was on crutches after the game and was scheduled to return to Baltimore for further evaluation.

The injury is a big blow to the Orioles since Hairston is hitting .287 and leads the American League with 14 stolen bases.

To take his roster spot, the Orioles called up second baseman Brian Roberts from Triple-A Ottawa of the International League. Roberts was batting .315 with 13 doubles at Ottawa.
