Singh stays on top by one at Byron Nelson

IRVING, Texas, May 17 (UPI) -- Vijay Singh wasn't at his very best, but he did enough Saturday to retain the lead after the third round of the $5.6 million Byron Nelson Championship.

Singh had two birdies and a bogey for a steady 1-under-par 69 in a testing breeze at the TPC at Las Colinas. With one round left, he has an 11-under 199 total, one stroke better than Jeff Sluman (68).

Cameron Beckman (67) and Luke Donald (67) are two shots behind, while nine others are within four shots of the lead.

"I haven't played this course with that wind, so I was unsure of the clubbing," said Singh. "I played solid, didn't miss too many shots. We all play to be in position to win on Sunday, and I'm in the best position."

Sluman agreed it was not an easy day to play.

"The wind was coming from a different direction and the greens firmed up," he said. "I'm not unhappy with my position. I thought I played well."

David Toms shot the day's best round, a 65, to pull within four strokes of the lead.

"I've been tired all week, mentally and physically," admitted Toms, who won last week's Wachovia Championship, despite a quadruple bogey at the final hole. "I'm exhausted. I'm trying to hang in there, do the best I can. It takes a lot out of you when you win."
