NEW YORK, May 14 (UPI) -- Dereck Whittenburg, who guided Wagner to the first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history last season, will be introduced Thursday as the new basketball coach at Fordham.
The school will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. EDT to announce the successor to the embattled Bob Hill. A university spokesman confirmed it is Whittenburg.
Forever known as the player whose airball became the winning basketball for North Carolina State in the 1983 national championship game, Whittenburg compiled a 67-50 record in four seasons at Wagner.
The Seahawks improved their record each season under Whittenburg. In March, they lost to second-seeded Pittsburgh in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Midwest Region.
Before coming to Staten Island, the 42-year-old Whittenburg served as an assistant coach at North Carolina State, George Mason, Long Beach State, Colorado, West Virginia and Georgia Tech. He turned down an assistant's job with the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies before he was hired by Wagner.
Hill's 10-year, $2.5 million contract was terminated April 30 with six years remaining. The Rams' 4-24 record last season was the worst in school's 100-year history.
