PITTSBURGH, May 14 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates placed starting second baseman Pokey Reese on the 60-day disabled list Wednesday with torn ligaments in his left thumb.

Reese suffered the injury when making a headfirst slide while stealing second base in Tuesday's game against the Houston Astros. Reese is expected to undergo surgery for the injury at some point.

Abraham Nunez, who is batting just .217 with two RBI, is expected to see a majority of playing time at second base in Reese's absence.
