Indians buy Boyd contract, demote Santiago

CLEVELAND, May 4 (UPI) -- The Cleveland Indians on Sunday purchased the contract of Jason Boyd from Class AAA Buffalo and sent fellow righthander Jose Santiago outright to the International League club.

Boyd is 1-0 with three saves and a 1.23 ERA in nine games for the Bisons this season, giving up 12 hits while walking two and striking out 14 in 14 2/3 innings. He last appeared in the major leagues last season with San Diego.

Santiago is 0-1 with a 3.94 ERA in 15 relief appearances for the Indians this year, surrendering 25 hits in 16 1/3 innings. Batters have a .368 average against him.
