Nicklaus makes cut on Nationwide Tour

TRAVELERS REST, S.C., May 3 (UPI) -- Jack Nicklaus showed glimpses of his glorious past Saturday, but it was a bleak day for his golfing sons.

Nicklaus almost shot his age in the second round of the BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs, but play was suspended for the third straight day due to inclement weather.

Severe thunderstorms, with golf ball-sized hail, forced the third round to be suspended at mid-afternoon. Play was scheduled to resume Sunday at 7:45 a.m.

The 63-year-old Nicklaus fired a 5-under-par 67 to move up 60 spots to 21st at the $575,000 Nationwide Tour event. He slumped at the start of the third round with three bogeys in the first five holes, slipping to a tie for 48th.

Tripp Isenhour was tied for the lead with Eric Meeks at 10-under after playing one hole in the third round.

"It was cool to see," Isenhour said. "I mean the guy is the best ever. To shoot 67 out here in a Nationwide even is pretty cool. To have him in the same field is nice."

Nicklaus, who is playing with sons Michael, Gary, Jackie and Steve for the first time in competition, was at 3-under, seven shots off the lead.

Michael, Gary and Jackie failed to make the cut after the second round was completed.

The winner of a record 18 majors among 73 PGA Tour victories, Jack Nicklaus won the pro celebrity division, which was reduced from 54 holes to 36 as a result of the weather. He and son Steven claimed the championship by two strokes at 21-under.

Meeks and Isenhour completed their second rounds early Saturday afternoon as Meeks fired a 3-under-par 68 at Keowee Vineyards and Isenhour a 2-under 70 at Cliffs Valley.
