WASHINGTON, May 3 (UPI) -- D.C. United went to overtime for the fourth time in as many matches Saturday night, but settled for a 0-0 tie with the Dallas Burn in a battle of winless teams.
United carried the play from the start. In the second minute, Santino Quaranta nearly sent Earnie Stewart in alone. Minutes later, Quaranta was pulled down in the area by Jason Kreis, but no foul was called.
As the first half came to a close, midfielder Ben Olsen picked out Stewart with a good cross, but the resulting header sailed over the net.
Kreis forced a good save from United goalkeeper Nick Rimando and Eddie Johnson beat Rimando with a header that grazed the crossbar. United counterattacked and a curling effort from Marco Etcheverry tested D.J. Countess, who just tipped the ball around the far goalpost.
In the second half, tempers threatened to boil over. Dema Kovalenko ran onto a poor backpass that Countess parried away before Rimando came up big on a powerful shot by midfielder Antonio Martinez on the run from the left side.
Etcheverry had the best chance in the final moments, taking a through ball in the area and firing a shot into the side netting.
United moved to 0-1-3 while the Burn are 0-1-2.
