Srichaphan, Schalken advance at BMW Open

MUNICH, Germany, April 28 (UPI) -- Second seed Paradorn Srichaphan completed some late repairs to his claycourt game Monday and beat German wild card Michael Kohlmann, 6-4, 6-1, for a place in the second round of the BMW Open.

The righthander from Bangkok, badly defeated a week ago in his opening match in Barcelona by Spain's David Sanchez, showed what a week's worth of intensive training can do in a 65-minute rout Monday.

Srichaphan broke twice in the first set and lost his own service once to take the opening set. With his confidence growing on his least favorite surface, he quickly cruised past the 189th-ranked Kohlmann in the second.

Match videos, many shot by his father and coach Chanachai, and television have been a prime learning material for Srichaphan, the winner of three tournaments in the past eight months.

Third seed Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands advanced comfortably over Germany's Lars Burgsmuller, 6-3, 6-1, while fifth-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov finally won a match at the Iphitos.

The 29-year-old Russian had gone out in the first round in 1995, 2001 and 2002, but defeated Belgian Oliver Rochus, 6-3, 6-2, Monday.

No. 8 Jarkko Nieminen of Finland topped Georgia's Irakli Labadze, 6-2, 6-3. Nieminen has reached the third round in his past two claycourt events in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

Wayne Arthurs of Australia and Alexander Waske were unseeded winners. Arthurs got past Thomas Behrend of Germany, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5, while Waske beat Romania's Adrian Voinea, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2).

Top seed Roger Federer of Switzerland, who has not played since taking his nation into the Davis Cup semifinals last month, takes on Croatian Zeljko Krajan on Tuesday.

Seventh-seeded Tim Henman of Britain, playing his first match in a month and opener on clay after an on-off recovery from winter shoulder surgery, faces a Tuesday challenge from Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti.
