Pistolesi reaches second round

WARSAW, Poland, April 28 (UPI) -- Seventh seed Anna Pistolesi advanced Monday to the second round of $700,000 J&S Cup with a straight-sets victory over Barbara Schett.

Fresh off helping Israel to a Fed Cup Qualifying Group win over the weekend, Pistolesi posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over her Austrian foe in the only main draw singles match of the day.

Schett lost her eighth straight first-round match.

In other marches, Russia's Elena Likhovtseva withdrew with a respiratory infection. Likhovtseva's place in the main draw was taken by countrywoman Tatiana Panova, whose own spot was filled with a lucky loser.

Likhovtseva herself had been made the ninth seed after No. 8 Conchita Martinez pulled out Sunday with tendinitis in her right shoulder.

Martinez, ranked No. 25, has been bothered by a right shoulder injury since before Amelia Island and aggravated it over the weekend playing Fed Cup in Tarragona, Spain, against Australia.

Even though she won her match against Nicole Pratt, Martinez felt a lot of pain in the shoulder and decided she could not compete this week.

American Venus Williams is the top seed. Williams helped the United States rout the Czech Republic in the Fed Cup first round. She has played just three tournaments this year, falling in the fourth round at Miami in March in her last WTA Tour event.
