VALENCIA, Spain, April 28 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Spaniard Alex Corretja, a former French Open finalist, was ousted from the claycourt Valencia Open Monday by France's Anthony Dupuis, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Corretja accepted a wild card into this tournament, hoping to rediscover his game, but instead fell to just 4-7 on the ATP circuit this year.
In the only other match featuring a seeded player, Markus Hipfl of Austria eliminated No. 7 Jose Acasuso of Argentina, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). It was his first match victory since he had surgery on his rotator cuff last August.
Spain's Fernando Vicente posted a 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-3 triumph over countryman Feliciano Lopez. Afterwards, the winner expressed his delight that this event moved from Mallorca to his hometown.
Armenia's Sargis Sargsian rolled over Spain's David Ferrer, 6-4, 6-1; Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia outlasted Magnus Norman of Sweden, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5; and Spaniard Albert Portas beat Slovakian Karol Beck, 6-2, 6-2.
