Olympic champ Mike Larrabee dies

SANTA MARIA, Calif., April 23 (UPI) -- Mike Larrabee, the 400-meter gold medalist at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, died Tuesday of pancreatic cancer at his home. He was 69.

Larrabee rallied from sixth place with 200 meters to go in the 400 final to win in 45.1 seconds.

He also ran the second leg of the United States' gold medal-winning 4x400 relay team that won in the world-record time of 3:00.7.

Larrabee competed for Southern California and later for the Southern California Striders. The stadium at Larrabee's high school in Ventura, Calif. is named after him.
