OAKLAND, Calif., April 23 (UPI) -- Miguel Tejada led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a long home run Tuesday night to give the Oakland Athletics a 6-5 win over the woeful Detroit Tigers.
One out away from their sixth straight win over Detroit, the Athletics prolonged the game when Tejada one-hopped his throw to first base on a grounder by Bobby Higginson to first base. Eugene Kingsale made Oakland pay, stroking an RBI single off closer Keith Foulke, who had been perfect in 11 career save opportunities against the Tigers.
Tejada redeemed himself in the 11th, launching a 3-1 offering from Wil Ledezma (0-1) into the stands in left field for his second career walk-off homer.
Ricardo Rincon (1-0) benefited from Tejada's heroics, getting the win after tossing two scoreless innings.
Mark Ellis and Ramon Hernandez collected three hits apiece for Oakland, which posted just its fourth win in 12 games after opening the season with a 7-1 mark.
Dmitri Young belted a three-run homer for the Tigers, who lost their eighth straight game and dropped to 1-17.
