Bill Self headed to Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan., April 20 (UPI) -- The University of Kansas called a news conference for Monday amid varying reports that Illinois Coach Bill Self will take over the Jayhawks' basketball team.

The Chicago Sun Times reported Sunday that Self was seen removing items from his office at Illinois Saturday night. The Kansas City Star said Self had accepted the Kansas job.

Self, 40, began his coaching career as an assistant under Larry Brown at Kansas. He has coached for the last three years at Illinois and compiled a 78-24 record with a trip to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in 2002.

Self will have a tough act to follow at Kansas, where Williams led the Jayhawks to four Final Four appearances and two trips to the national championship game.

Williams left Kansas last week to return to North Carolina, his alma mater.
