Serna reaches quarterfinals

BUDAPEST, Hungary, April 17 (UPI) -- Second seed Magui Serna of Spain needed three sets to advance Thursday while top seed Iva Majoli of Croatia withdrew in the second round of the Budapest Grand Prix.

Serna, who cruised to a straight-sets win over Germany's Angelika Roesch in the first round, overcame Hungarian lucky loser Katalin Marosi, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

The 24-year-old Serna won her second career title Sunday, when she defeated German qualifier Julia Schruff in the final at Estoril. Serna next faces another local favorite, Petra Mandula, in the quarterfinals.

Majoli, who has eight career titles, got past Romanian lucky loser Andreea Vanc in three sets on Wednesday, but withdrew due to illness. Yugoslavian qualifier Jelena Jankovic received a walkover and advances to a quarterfinal meeting with Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain.

Mandula, who was born in Budapest and is seeking her first title, defeated Czech Libuse Prusova, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

Slovakian qualifier Jarmila Gajdosova moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win over French fifth seed Virginie Razzano. Czech Iveta Benesova also had a straight-sets win, 6-3, 7-5 over Argentine qualifier Gisela Dulko.
