Schramm to go into Cowboys Ring of Honor

IRVING, Texas, April 16 (UPI) -- Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced Wednesday that the team's former president and general manager, Tex Schramm, would be inducted into the franchise's Ring of Honor during the 2003 season.

Schramm, a key ingredient in the Cowboys' NFL record 20-year streak of winning seasons, will be the 12th member of the Ring of Honor at Texas Stadium and the first to be inducted since Bob Hayes in 2001.

Schramm, 82, is already a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He appeared at a news conference Wednesday at the stadium.

"For a person who is in this business, and it is a competitive business, when you feel you have made a contribution, one of the important things is that somebody else recognizes this," Schramm said. "That is what is so special about being in the Ring of Honor."

Since taking over the team in 1989, Jones has inducted linebacker Lee Roy Jordan, who feuded with Schramm during his playing days, along with Tom Landry, Tony Dorsett, Randy White and Hayes, who died last September.

Schramm was responsible for the hiring of Landry as the only coach the team had during its first 30 years. He also played a prominent role in the merging of the AFL and NFL.
