DENVER, April 12 (UPI) -- Landon Donovan set up both goals and won his MLS debut Saturday night as the San Jose Earthquakes held on for a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids.
Donovan, who is a native of Canada, also is the midfielder for the U.S. National team.
The Earthquakes wasted no time grabbing the lead as Brian Ching got on the board in the opening minute for his new team.
Midfielder Brian Mullan switched the point of attack from the right side, swinging the ball over to Ching on the far side.
Ching found space and sent a low half-volley past 'keeper Scott Garlick.
Left back Todd Dunivant added a much-needed insurance goal on his first touch in the MLS. Donovan sent the ball wide to the overlapping Dunivant off an aerial challenge, leaving the Stanford product a clear path to the net.
Dunivant varied his pace to draw Garlick off his line before slipping the ball through the 'keeper's legs.
The Rapids got one back in the opening minutes of the second half as rookie scoring threat Casey Schmidt and Liberian international Zizi Roberts broke in 2-on-none. Onstad made the initial challenge on Schmidt, but the Rapids newcomer poked the ball wide to a trailing Roberts for the empty-net goal.
