Report: Bucs ink Jim Miller

TAMPA, Fla., March 31 (UPI) -- Veteran quarterback Jim Miller is now on the payroll of the NFL world champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Tampa Tribune reported Monday that Miller, who was waived by the Chicago Bears earlier this year, has come to terms with the Bucs. ESPN had a similar report on Friday.

The team has not confirmed the report. The Tribune report said Miller got a one-year deal that includes a $25,000 signing bonus and a $655,000 salary, but has not yet passed a Bucs physical.

Last week, Tampa Bay signed quarterback Shane Matthews to serve as a veteran backup to Brad Johnson.

Miller, 32, is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and is not expected to be ready until June.

After releasing Miller, the Bears signed free agent Kordell Stewart to a two-year, $5 million contract.

In 2001, Miller led the Bears to a 13-3 record and the NFC Central title, their first division crown since 1990, but he was plagued by injuries last season.

Miller made 13 of his 27 career starts in 2001, passing for 2,299 yards and 13 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. In eight starts last season, he completed 180-of-314 passes for 1,944 yards and 13 touchdowns with nine interceptions.

The Tribune also reported that the Bucs also are believed to be close to finalizing deals for left tackle Roman Oben and free-agent tight end Rickey Dudley.
