Virginia Tech 61, Georgia Tech 59

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., March 22 (UPI) -- Freshman Carrie Mason hit a layup with 1.1 seconds remaining Saturday to lift seventh-seeded Virginia Tech to a 61-59 win over Georgia Tech in a first-round East Region matchup of the women's NCAA Tournament.

Virginia Tech blew a six-point lead before the 5-7 Mason drove past 6-5 Sonja Mallory and scored on a finger roll.

Ieva Kublina had 18 points and six rebounds to lead Virginia Tech (22-9), which improved to 5-1 all time in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Fallon Stokes had 25 points and five rebounds and Alex Stewart added 10 and nine for Georgia Tech (20-11), which was making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1993.
