FORT MYERS, Fla., March 20 (UPI) -- Pedro Martinez allowed a run and three hits in five innings Thursday and David Ortiz, Jeremey Giambi and Nomar Garciaparra homered as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers, 5-3.
Martinez, who picked up his first win in three spring decisions, did not walk a batter and struck out five. Ramiro Mendoza, Mike Timlin and Alan Embree tossed a scoreless inning apiece in relief.
Ortiz had two RBI while Shea Hillenbrand continued his torrid hitting this spring with two hits.
Adam Bernero started for Detroit and took the loss, allowing three runs and six hits in five innings.
George Lombard homered in his only at-bat for Detroit. Dmitri Young and Bobby Higginson had two hits apiece for the Tigers, who managed only eight.
