NEW ORLEANS, March 19 (UPI) -- The New Orleans Saints Wednesday re-signed running back Fred McAfee, an excellent special teams player, to a one-year contract.
McAfee made his first trip to the Pro Bowl following the 2002 season and has been a Saints captain the last two years. He had 16 special teams tackles and forced a fumble last season despite missing five games and parts of two others due to a hamstring injury.
"Re-signing Fred was a priority because he is an important part of our team," said Saints general manager Mickey Loomis. "He's not only one of league's top players on special teams, but he is a leader in our locker room. And though he was limited last year, he is coming off one of his best seasons."
McAfee was signed by New Orleans at the start of the 2000 season, returning to the club that drafted him in the sixth round in 1991 out of Mississippi College.
The 12th-year veteran has also played for Arizona, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay during his career.
The Saints have also signed defensive tackle John Schlecht, who appeared in six games with the San Francisco 49ers in 2001, notching seven tackles. He has been allocated to NFL Europe by New Orleans.
