Dyson signs with Panthers

CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 19 (UPI) -- The Carolina Panthers have come to terms with veteran wide receiver Kevin Dyson.

The Panthers upgraded their receiving corps for the second time in less than a week by signing the unrestricted free agent. He has spent his entire career with the Tennessee Titans, but is best known for being tackled inches shy of the goal line in Super Bowl XXXIV.

Contract terms were not disclosed.

The Panthers, who ranked 30th in the NFL in passing last season, signed veteran Ricky Proehl away from the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

Dyson, 27, caught 41 passes for 460 yards and four touchdowns last season.

"Kevin improves our speed on offense, and is a proven receiver who has been productive," said Carolina Coach John Fox. "He has made big plays in critical situations, and knows how to win."

Unfortunately, Dyson forever embedded himself in football lore when he was tackled just shy of the end zone by linebacker Mike Jones on the final play of Tennessee's 23-16 loss to the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXIV in January 2000.

He also returned a lateral 75 yards for a memorable touchdown in the final seconds of Tennessee's win over Buffalo in the 1999 wild card round, a game known as "The Music City Miracle."

The 6-1, 208-pounder received offers from several clubs, including the New York Jets, who lost Laveranues Coles to the Washington Redskins.

In Carolina, Dyson probably will start alongside Muhsin Muhammad, with Proehl serving as the third or fourth receivers.

Dyson, a star at the University of Utah, was a first-round pick of the Titans in 1998, and was selected ahead of Minnesota's Randy Moss that season. He has caught 176 passes for 2,310 yards and 28 touchdowns in 58 games.

His best season came in 2001, when caught 54 passes for 825 yards and seven touchdowns.
