LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 12 (UPI) -- Brandon Spann hit four three-pointers and finished with 16 points Wednesday to lead Tulane to a 74-52 win over Houston in the opening round of the Conference USA Tournament.

The Green Wave advance to play Louisville in Thursday's quarterfinals.

In the first game of the day, Reggie Kohn scored 23 points, including seven three-pointers, to help South Florida a 76-74 win over DePaul. South Florida advanced to play Memphis in the quarterfinal round.

The evening action saw Alabama-Birmingham crush Charlotte, 85-61, and Southern Mississippi surprise Cincinnati, 63-61.

It was the first time in the tournament's history that Cincinnati had not been the No. 1 seed.

Southern Mississippi's winning points came on a layup by Jasper Johnson with four seconds remaining after he claimed a rebound off a missed attempt by teammate Greg Johnson.

Leonard Stokes had tied it at 61-61 for Cincinnati with 40 seconds remaining.

Chadd Moore missed a potential tying jumper with one second left.

In Thursday's quarterfinals, South Florida will play Memphis, Tulane will take on Louisville, Alabama-Birmingham will meet regular-season champion Marquette and Southern Mississippi will tackle St. Louis.
