WASHINGTON, March 11 (UPI) -- Jerry Stackhouse scored 31 points, including 15-of-15 from the line, to help lift the Washington Wizards Tuesday night to a 106-105 victory over the Orlando Magic.
Jordan chastised his teammates for their lack of support and desire to win following the Wizards' 97-96 loss at New York on Sunday. Stackhouse, who also voiced some complaints about his teammates, had just five points in the contest.
This time, Stackhouse scored 13 points in the fourth quarter. He sank two free throws to give Washington the lead for good, 93-91, with 3:24 left, then added a three-point play and six free throws in the final 74 seconds, including a pair from the stripe that gave Washington a four-point lead with four seconds left.
"We know the motive of the statements was to inspire us to play, and I think it worked," Stackhouse said. "We all came out inspired. We made a couple of mistakes at times, but for the most part, everybody played hard and tried to do the right thing for us to win the game."
Jordan scored 23 points, Larry Hughes added 20, Christian Laettner 13, and Brandon Haywood 11 for the Wizards, who entered the contest two games behind Milwaukee for the eighth and final NBA Eastern Conference playoff berth and 2 1/2 back of the Magic.
"It felt good to come out with a good showing," Hughes said. "We were doing things aggressively, and everybody saw it was going to be a good game for us."
Tracy McGrady had another outstanding game for Orlando, scoring 43 points, his 10th 40-point game of the season, on 16-of-26 shooting.
"I wanted to go out there and try to win the game," McGrady said. "It's a crucial part of the season. It's a crucial time for us to try to rack up wins and try to move up the ladder into playoff spots."
"He hit everything he could," Jordan said. "We did the best job that we possibly could, (but) he hit some great shots."
"I could've came out here and had 10 points and if we would've won, I'd been happy," said an angry McGrady, "but for him to get the win is just tearing me up right now. The game that I had really doesn't mean anything."
Rookies Gordan Girieck and Drew Gooden added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Magic, who had won eight of their previous 10 games.
Both teams shot 53 percent from the field, but Orlando was 11-of-20 from the arc while Washington was 0-of-2. However, the Wizards connected on 30-of-32 free throws while the Magic sank only 12-of-17.
Washington outscored Orlando in the paint, 48-28.
