Seahawks sign new punter

SEATTLE, March 12 (UPI) -- The Seattle Seahawks announced Wednesday they had signed punter Rodney Williams, who will return to the NFL after a one-year absence.

Williams signed a multi-year deal with the Seahawks, who needed a punter after veteran Jeff Feagles signed with the New York Giants. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"He is a talented young punter," Seattle special teams coordinator Pete Rodriguez said. "He has a lot of potential and a great leg."

Williams appeared in 15 games a rookie with the Giants in 2001, averaging 42.9 yards on 91 punts. He did not make New York's final roster following training camp last season.

The 25-year-old Williams was a seventh-round draft pick by the St. Louis Rams in 1999 but was released following training camp. He failed to make the Washington Redskins in 2000 before signing with New York.

Williams played for the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe in 2000 and 2001.
